Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia is a type of anxiety disorder in which you fear and avoid places or situations that might cause you to panic and make you feel trapped, helpless or embarrassed. The anxiety is caused by fear that there’s no easy way to escape or get help if the anxiety intensifies.

Many people assume agoraphobia is simply a fear of open spaces, but it’s actually a more complex condition, but many people may also experience these symptoms before they even enter the situation they dread. In some cases, the condition can be so severe that people avoid doing daily activities, such as going to the bank or grocery store, and stay inside their homes most of the day. Some people stop going into these situations because of a fear of being overwhelmed by anxiety and not being able to escape or get help.

If someone with agoraphobia finds themselves in a stressful situation, they’ll usually experience the symptoms of a panic attack, such as: rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing (hyperventilating), feeling hot and sweaty, feeling sick.
